"Employee perceptions of their manager's genuine care is generally quite strong but is rarely has a high impact on overall effectiveness. A manager's efforts to develop their team on the other hand is generally lower than other areas and is in fact very important to being perceived to be effective."

Summary:

Our Manager Effectiveness benchmark is based on our Google Oxygen inspired Manager Effectiveness survey and will allow your company and your managers to see how they are doing compared to other managers around the world. Anatomy of the benchmark:

The benchmark data is aggregated from over 50,000 respondents (reporting to ~7000 managers with 3 or more reports) from nearly 100 companies. The median number of respondents per manager was 6.

There is a wide range of industries represented:

Insight: Manager do particularly well at showing that they care about employees but relative to the other measures many managers have opportunities to increase their focus on developing talent, providing a clear vision and goal setting.

Insight: Managers keeping their teams informed and supporting their development were the highest impacting questions on overall manager effectiveness.

The following questions do not have comparisons in this benchmark because they did not recieve enough responses to meet our thresholds.

  • My manager ensures I am in the right place in the company to be successful
  • My manager collaborates well across organisational boundaries (e.g. teams, departments, etc.)
  • My manager makes decisions effectively (i.e. timely, with sufficient information/ perspectives)
  • My manager gives me actionable feedback on a regular basis
